Perl - Practical Extraction and Report Language

Perl is a dynamic programming language created by Larry Wall and first released in 1987. It is great for writing platform independent Linux/UNIX scripts, it's part of every common BSD or UNIX OS you'll find out there (including Linux and MacOS X), there's a vast collection of useful modules called the CPAN archive, it even runs on Microsoft Windows platforms using ActivePerl and it scales very well, which means that you can use it for single-line scripts as well as for entire web application suites.

I started Perl programming around 1999/2000 when I first needed to automate things on the web. I found PHP to be not powerful enough, so I opted for Perl and also started the OLEFA project using Perl. I really like Perl because of its' straight forward language design, the fact that there are many ways to solve a single problem and, of course, because of its' powerful regular expressions. CorneliOS is also written in Perl.
